SIM card in Amsterdam: which mobile operator to choose

Any trip is an event that you want to tell your friends about. Every delight must certainly be shared with the whole world by taking a photo and immediately posting it on your virtual page.

A mobile phone has long become a connecting thread between people, no matter where they are, but to always stay in touch, you need a profitable package - this will allow you to freely communicate via text, voice messages and seamlessly access the World Wide Web.

How mobile communications work in the Netherlands

Since 2017, EU residents can call, text and use the Internet throughout the commonwealth at no additional cost.

Some operators offer packages with access outside the European Union while maintaining this privilege, so when planning to tour European countries, it makes sense to use a local SIM card.

Mobile communications in Amsterdam and its features

Какую SIM карту купить в Амстердаме для интернета
Which SIM card to buy in Amsterdam for the Internet

It cannot be said that SIM cards in Amsterdam are anything special, and this is good news, since you won’t have to get used to the innovation.

There are two service options:

Prepaid – prepayment (as the fitter Mechnikov said in the novel by Ilf and Petrov “The Twelve Chairs”, “Money in the morning, chairs in the evening”).

This means that you deposit no less than the required amount into your account (depending on the package and operator), and you can freely communicate, using all the declared benefits, until the funds run out.

Such a SIM card in Amsterdam is available to anyone without reference to passport data, and you can buy it in every supermarket, kiosk, train station and airport. The downside is that the rates are much higher than with a subscription.

Postpaid – contract (subscription). This means that first you use the service, and then pay the received bill. The proposed service (SMS, calls and Internet) is cheaper in this case, but this option is only suitable if you are going to live in Amsterdam for a long time or come here often, and you have a local bank account.

To use the package on a contract, you need to sign up for a period of 1 or 2 years, although there are also monthly offers, and you need to have your ID, bank card and account details with you.

Read also: Money in Amsterdam: where to exchange and spend

There is a fee for connecting such a card. In addition, you will not be able to terminate its service before the agreed date. More precisely, you can, but you still need to pay for the remaining unused time.

For example, you issued a card for 1 year, but decided to cancel it after a month. The remaining 11 months will have to be paid as compensation to the operator.

About mobile operators

The main cellular operators in the Netherlands with their own networks are:

  • KPN
  • Tele2
  • Vodafone
  • T-Mobile

The remaining representatives of mobile communications operate under the MVNO system, using their network and, in fact, are virtual companies. This has its advantages, and the most important thing is that the coverage is the same as that of the “donor”, but the prices for services are much lower. As for the quality of service, everything depends on the “recipient” company, and the “donor” has nothing to do with this.

The choice of alternatives is large (over 20 operators), but it is better to select a SIM card based on the conclusions of an independent evaluator, for example, BesteMobieleProviders, which highlights the results based on a user survey.

For the period January–March 2019, the following list was obtained, in which the service of the competitors was assessed using a 5-point system:

During the test, users' opinions were taken into account about the cost of the service, how stable the connection and Internet are, whether problems are quickly resolved when asking for help, and whether there are additional services.

All providers give you the opportunity to purchase an unlimited number of call minutes and MB, but the cost is different for everyone, and you need to look at where it is more profitable to sign up for a bulk package at once, and where it is better to create blocks according to your preferences.

Over time, the list may change - new service providers will appear or “old-timers” will fix existing problems and enter new positions. You can find out which operator is the best at the moment on the website: https://www.bestemobieleproviders.nl

And now about each in a little more detail.

Mobile operator KPN

Мобильный оператор KPN
Mobile operator KPN

This is the largest national provider in the Netherlands, operating in 2G, 3G and 4G at a speed of 300 Mbit/s, which allows you to watch and download videos on YouTube. He relies on the contractual basis of the relationship, and the following options are popular for a 2-year subscription:

  • 5 GB with 4G (300 Mbit/s) + unlimited calls/SMS = 25 euros/month.
  • 15 GB with 4G (300 Mbit/s) + 150 minutes of calls/texts = 29 euros/month.

One-time payment for connection – 25 euros.

Until recently, only one package was available for prepayment. Now the range has expanded to three:

  • Unlimited Internet (128 Kb/s) – 9.99 euros/month.
  • 1 GB Internet (14.4 Mbps) for applications, mail and streaming – 9.99 euros/month.
  • SIM card for calls and SMS – 4.99 euros/month.

The new card has a balance of 10 euros, but only 2.50 euros are available upon purchase, and the remaining 7.50 euros will appear after registering on the company’s website. If you install the MijnKPN application on your phone, you can get a nice bonus when you top up your account with Qpwaardeerkaart vouchers:

  • By topping up your account with 10 euros, an additional 15 euros will be credited.
  • Top up your account with 20 euros – 35 euros.

The cost of calls outside the package is 0.30 euros/minute, and for 1 text message – 0.06 euros. If you use mobile Internet without a corresponding package, the fee will be 0.15 euros per 1 MB. Such tariffs quickly hit your pocket, and therefore the operator offers to combine your own options. To activate them, just call or dial a code.

This British company has successfully taken root in many countries, including the Netherlands. VodafoneZiggo is the product of a merger between Liberty Global, Ziggo and Vodafone, with each holding a stake.

The coverage is good, but slightly inferior to KPN, T-Mobile and Tele2. In 2020, the company plans to stop using the 3G network (43.3 Mbit/s), completely switching to 4G Internet (250 Mbit/s). You can freely buy bags in different variations at almost any retail outlet, especially in supermarkets, train stations and airports.

Mobile operator T-Mobile

Мобильный оператор T-Mobile
Mobile operator T-Mobile

T-Mobile is another significant operator in the Netherlands with great coverage and an excellent customer loyalty system. If there are problems with communication, users can be given an additional 2 GB as compensation, and when 4G is tested, they can count on 4 GB as a gift.

In the contract, T-Mobile promises consumers a maximum download speed of 256 Mbps, although it advertises itself at 300 Mbps and actually delivers 225 Mbps, according to the evaluator. 4G Internet is mainly used, and 3G is a backup.

SIM cards can be bought in branded stores, gas stations, supermarkets, and topped up with vouchers for 10, 15, 20, and 40 euros.

The code from the card can be transferred in different ways:

  • Via a special form on the operator’s website: https://www.t-mobile.nl/prepaid/opwaarderen/online
  • By sending an SMS to number 1444.
  • Call 1244 for free and follow the instructions by entering the 16-digit code.

In addition to the voucher, other ways to top up your balance are available:

  • Online through the website: https://opwaarderen.t-mobile.nl/
  • Automatically after 31 days (registration on the website is required).
  • Via the My T-Mobile mobile app.
  • Via SMS (pre-registration required).

If you are looking for a 1 or 2 year contract package, choose the one that suits you best.

For 1 year with unlimited calls (monthly payment):

  • 0 GB + calls = 13.50 euros.
  • 1 GB + calls = 15.50 euros.
  • 2 GB + calls = 17.50 euros.
  • 5 GB + calls = 18.50 euros.
  • 10 GB + calls = 23.50 euros.
  • Unlimited GB + calls = 36 euros.
  • Unlimited GB + calls (including USA) = 61 euros.

A package with a limit of 120 minutes for calls will be cheaper in all respects by 2.50 euros.
If you choose the 2-year contract option, prices for all items are 1 euro lower.

There are also excellent choices for prepaid SIM cards.

The standard package costs 10 euros, 5 of which are available immediately for text messages and calls, and 5 will only become active after registration. This Sim Only PrePaid can be upgraded, that is, supplemented with what you need for full communication.

Simple is a subsidiary of T-Mobile and uses its network, considered the best in the Netherlands. At the same time, the mobile Internet speed of the “daughter” is not the highest (4G with 75 Mbit/s), but they try to compensate for this with polite customer service and cheap packages, which is what a tourist who comes to stay in the capital for a few days requires.

Unfortunately, as of August 1, 2019, the provider has decided to stop using prepaid packages.

Mobile operator Simyo

Мобильный оператор Simyo
Mobile operator Simyo

Simyo uses the KPN network and became a leader in quality customer service in 2019. If you need help, you can ask for it by email, through the online form on the website or on Twitter.

Other advantages include a speed of 256 Mbit/s for 3 G and 4G, which allows you not only to check email, but also listen to music and videos via the Internet on Youtube in good quality, as well as communicate through online applications. In turn, this was the reason for raising prices for services, although until 2018 the provider was attracted precisely by the availability of packages.

Subscription to the service is issued for a year and monthly. Simyo is the only company in the country that does not have a two-year contract. When choosing a package, you can combine it yourself from the proposed options for the number of MB and messages.

4G Internet subscription:

  • 1000 MB – 4 euros.
  • 2000 Mb – 9 euros.
  • 4000 Mb – 10 euros.
  • 8000 Mb – 16 euros.

Attach message blocks to them:

  • 100 min/SMS – 6 euros.
  • 300 min/SMS – 7 euros.
  • Unlimited – 11 euros.

The following Internet packages are available for prepayment for a period of 1 month:

  • 150 MB – 5 euros.
  • 500 MB – 7.50 euros.
  • 1000 MB – 10 euros.

For calls and SMS:

  • 100 min/SMS – 10 euros.
  • 300 min/SMS – 30 euros.

Cost of services outside the package:

  • Text messages – 0.10 euros (per 1 SMS).
  • Calls – 0.10 euros/minute.
  • Internet - 0.15 euro/Mb.

Simyo has a referral system - by inviting friends, you earn additional money into your account. If the invited person chooses prepayment, your reward will be 5 euros, if the subscription is 10 euros.

You can order a card on the company’s website, and the account is topped up through the My Simyo application with a minimum amount of 10 euros.

Mobile operator Hollandsnieuwe

Мобильный оператор Hollandsnieuwe
Mobile operator Hollandsnieuwe

This telecom provider uses the Vodafone network and relies on 4G. If your phone does not support this format, you will be automatically transferred to the Vodafone 3G network.

This is a budget operator with inexpensive services, and the conditions for using funds are very flexible and attractive. It often happens that there is not enough MB, but the payment for calls and SMS disappears unused.

In this case, money is drawn from a common “pot”, allowing you to spend it on what is more relevant to you. The operation scheme is simple: 1 MB = 1 call = 1 SMS.

But the maximum speed is quite mediocre - 150 Mbit/s.

Only 1 and 2 year subscriptions are available and pay monthly.

Mobile operator Ben

Мобильный оператор Ben
Mobile operator Ben

This operator has an excellent balance between price and quality: large coverage, fast and high-quality service, low cost of services.

Ben uses the T-Mobile network, and you can count on reliable connections anywhere in the Netherlands. There is a choice of 3G (14.4 Mbps), 4G (225 Mbps) and 4G Extra Fast, which works twice as fast as regular 4G.

The provider often organizes sales and promotions, so you can almost always get additional MB or buy a package cheaper.

Although Ben only offers 1 or 24 month subscriptions, you can decide what your SIM card will be in Amsterdam by choosing the number of minutes, SMS and MB.

Calls and text messages when choosing the “Internet + calls” package for 1 month:

  • 100 min/sms – 4 euros.
  • 300 min/sms – 5 euros
  • Unlimited min/sms – 6 euros.

When choosing “Internet + calls” packages for 24 months, the price for all items will be lower by 1 euro.

For any option, it is possible to issue an additional 1000 SMS for 0.50 euros.

Internet for 1 and 24 months (with monthly payment) costs the same:

  • 1000 MB – 4 euros.
  • 3000 MB – 4.50 euros.
  • 5000 Mb – 6 euros.
  • 7000 MB – 9 euros.

The type of Internet also plays a role in pricing policy:
3G – 0 euros.
4G – 1 euro
4G Extra Fast – 2 euros.

Connection speed for the first account is 20 euros.

Payment is made automatically through the application or registration on the site. When the time comes, the required amount is withdrawn from the bank card account. The operation can also be performed manually.

Mobile operator Youfone

Мобильный оператор Youfone
Mobile operator Youfone

The company uses KPN communications, offers a choice of 3G, 4G and 4G+ with a maximum download speed of 256 Mbps and quite reasonable prices. But judging by the rating among users, they are still dissatisfied with something.

Some complain that they are not served as zealously as they would like, others that the much-vaunted connection periodically disappears. In general, the operator’s rating is so-so, although it operates on a grand scale, offering not only mobile services, but also TV with home Internet.

The packages include a subscription for 1 month, 1 and 2 years with access to the blocks of interest for connection. Also, in order to attract more customers, promotions are constantly running and bonuses are given out.

When choosing a monthly package, the following additions are possible:

1. Internet 4G (25 Mbit/s) and 4G + (256 Mbit/s).

  • 500 MB – 4 euros.
  • 1 GB – 6 euros.
  • 3 GB – 7 euros.
  • 6 GB – 8 euros.
  • 10 GB – 11 euros.
  • When choosing 4G+, the payment increases by 1 euro.

2. Conversations and SMS

  • 50 min/sms – 4 euro/min.
  • 150 min/sms – 6 euros.
  • 300 min/sms – 8 euros.
  • Unlimited – 10 euros.

One-time connection cost – 15 euros.

You can activate the card by following the instructions in the SMS or on the company’s website.

The invoice can be paid in three ways:

  • From a bank card automatically.
  • Manually through the MyYoufone mobile application.
  • Transfer to IBAN number: NL36ABNA0554248212 in the name of Youfone indicating client and account numbers.

Within the Lebar network there is no limit on SMS and calls.

According to the bestemobieleproviders service, Lebara is an operator with low prices, but it can hardly be called such. The very low 4G download speed is also not encouraging - only 25 Mbit/s, which is a significant drawback of the operator.

You can buy a SIM card in a company store or order it through the website. To activate it, you should click on the link in the letter that will arrive when the card is already in your phone.

Where to find free Wi-Fi in Amsterdam

We won’t say that free Internet in Amsterdam is being handed out left and right, but there are many points where guests of this amazing city can connect to the life-giving source of the World Wide Web completely freely.

These are mainly libraries, some museums, airports, train stations, hotels and large supermarkets.

The names of bars, cafes, restaurants and other public catering establishments with coordinates on the map can be found at the following link: http://www.wifi-amsterdam.nl/free_wifi_internet.html

It is also useful to study the map, which shows not just places with free Wi-Fi, but in some cases passwords to the wireless network: https://ru.wifispc.com/netherlands/provincie-noord-holland/amsterdam.html
